What is Framer?

Framer is a visual website builder for designing, building and publishing production websites in one tool. Designers lay out pages on a canvas much like a design app, add responsive breakpoints, interactions and a built-in CMS, and Framer hosts the published site on its own infrastructure, with no separate developer hand-off.

How Framer works

Pages are built on a freeform canvas with stacks, grids and components, so the layout you design is the layout that ships. Each page has responsive breakpoints for desktop, tablet and phone, and reusable components keep repeated elements consistent across the site.

Content that repeats, such as blog posts, case studies or team members, lives in CMS collections and is rendered through template pages.

What it is good for

Framer suits marketing sites, landing pages, portfolios and content-led sites where the design has to land exactly and the team wants to publish changes without waiting on developers. Hosting, SSL and content delivery are part of the platform.

Where it has limits

Framer is not an application framework. Complex logic, logged-in areas or deep integrations usually need custom code or a separate back end, and teams that want full control over hosting and the codebase may prefer a framework such as Astro.
