Framer alternatives, compared honestly: which website platform should you actually build on?
Choose the platform by matching it to the job the site has to do, not by picking the most popular name. For most marketing sites the deciding questions are simple: does it need to ship fast, does it need to stay editable by people who do not code, and how heavy are the content and integration demands. Framer wins that brief more often than not, which is why we build most sites in it. But it is not always the right answer, and this page tells you when it is not.
Trusted by B2B and premium service brands in 17+ countries.
There is no best platform, only the best fit for your brief.
Start from your buyer and your team, not from the platform. Map what the site has to do (marketing site, content operation, store, or app), who has to edit it after launch, and how fast it needs to change. The right no-code website builder for a five-page studio site is the wrong tool for a 500-article publisher, and the reverse is just as true.
Most website builder comparison content answers the wrong question. It ranks platforms on a feature checklist, as if the longest list wins. It does not. A platform you will never use half of is not better than a leaner one that does exactly what your site needs. The useful question is narrower: what kind of site are you building, and who keeps it alive after the agency leaves.
Building a fast, design-led marketing site your team can edit
Framer, Webflow and Squarespace all fit, in roughly that order of speed-to-ship for a considered design.
We build most of these in Framer, for the reasons below.
Running a serious content operation, or needing a specific plugin ecosystem
WordPress earns its place, with unmatched extensibility for commerce, membership, and specific SEO or LMS needs.
Wanting the cheapest, fastest DIY site and not fussy about bespoke design
Wix is genuinely good at this, with a huge template library and a low starting cost.
Wanting a polished, out-of-the-box template with almost no setup
Squarespace is best in class for portfolios, restaurants, and small commerce where the built-in designs are already close.
Building an app or an interactive prototype rather than a marketing site
Lovable generates working web apps from prompts, which is a different job from a content-led site.
Every comparison, side by side
Framer trades some raw configurability for speed, design freedom and a genuinely non-technical editing experience. Against each rival it wins some ground and gives some up. Here is the short version of each, with a link to the full head-to-head.

We build most sites in Framer, and we will tell you when something else fits you better.
We build most sites in Framer because it wins the brief most of our clients actually have: a marketing site that must ship fast, look genuinely custom, and stay editable by people who do not write code. When people search for framer alternatives, they are usually testing whether that choice holds. Often it does. Sometimes it does not.
The reason that choice holds is that the common brief is narrow. A studio, a SaaS company, a real-estate developer or a school does not need the deepest CMS on earth or a plugin for everything. It needs a fast, well-designed site the marketing lead can update on a Tuesday without filing a ticket. Framer does that better than anything else we build in, and as a Certified Framer studio it is also the platform we know deepest. Any honest framer review lands in the same place: strong on design, speed and editability, lighter on heavy CMS and plugin depth than the incumbents.
Heavy content operations or a specific plugin need
WordPress, and sometimes Webflow, is the better tool.
A store or membership product with real commerce depth
WordPress with WooCommerce, or a dedicated commerce platform, before Framer.
The project is really an application, not a site
Custom React and Next.js, which we also build, or an app-focused tool.
Framer is the wrong layer for that.
The hard constraint is starting price and templates are acceptable
Wix or Squarespace will get you live for less.
We build in Framer, Webflow and custom React and Next.js, so recommending against Framer costs us nothing. We would rather put you on the platform that fits than sell you the one we prefer.
Common questions
Answers, up front.
What is the best website platform for a marketing site?
For most marketing sites, Framer, Webflow and Squarespace are the strongest options, and the choice between them comes down to three things: how fast it needs to ship, how custom the design has to be, and who edits it after launch. We build most of them in Framer because it ships a bespoke design quickly and stays editable by non-developers. Webflow suits larger, content-heavy marketing sites with a technical team. Squarespace suits template-led sites where the built-in designs are already close. There is no single best platform, only the best fit for your brief.
What are the main alternatives to Framer?
The realistic alternatives to Framer for a marketing site are Webflow, Squarespace, Wix and WordPress. Webflow is the closest like-for-like for design control with deeper CMS structure. Squarespace and Wix are template-led and quicker or cheaper to start. WordPress is the choice when you need plugin depth or a large content operation. Lovable is sometimes mentioned as an alternative, but it is an AI app builder aimed at applications rather than content-led marketing sites, so it solves a different problem. Each is compared against Framer in detail on its own page.
When is Framer the wrong choice?
Framer is the wrong choice when your site is really an application, when you run a heavy content operation or need a specific plugin ecosystem (where WordPress fits better), when you need deep commerce or membership features, or when starting price is the hard constraint and a template is acceptable (where Wix or Squarespace win). We build in Framer, Webflow and custom React and Next.js, so we have no reason to push Framer where it does not fit, and we will say so during a call.
Can I move my site off a platform later if I change my mind?
Yes, but a platform move is a rebuild, not an export, on every one of these tools. None of Framer, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace or WordPress lets you lift a finished site cleanly into another. That is exactly why the platform choice is worth getting right at the start rather than reversing later. The good news is that the underlying assets you own, your content, brand and design decisions, carry over even when the build does not. We factor future flexibility into the recommendation up front.
