Framer vs Squarespace

Framer vs Squarespace: which should you actually use?

Use Squarespace if you want one tool that does everything, hosting, domain, templates, commerce and email, with almost no learning curve and a polished result fast. Use Framer if design quality, performance and modern interactions matter more than all-in-one convenience, and you want a site that does not look like a recognizable template. For most brands that treat their website as a serious sales asset, Framer wins. For a fast, tidy portfolio or a small shop run by a non-designer, Squarespace is a genuinely good answer.

Is Framer better than Squarespace?

The verdict

Not universally. Framer is better for design-led brands that want a higher visual ceiling and native interactions without plugins. Squarespace is better for people who want the least possible work: an all-in-one platform where hosting, domain, store, email campaigns and templates are already stitched together and reliable. The right answer depends entirely on what you are optimizing for.

Squarespace suits

The non-technical owner who wants a clean, professional site quickly, with the whole business (domain, hosting, commerce, scheduling, email) in one login. Millions of portfolios and small shops run on it for good reason. It is not a compromise, it is a very good product at what it does.

Framer suits

The design-led brand that wants near-total control over layout, typography and motion, a site that renders fast, and one that stays editable by non-developers after launch. The tradeoff is that Framer is a website platform, not a full business suite, so some things Squarespace bundles you assemble yourself.

The real choice

If you are choosing between them, you are really choosing between convenience and ceiling. That framing runs through everything below.

When is Squarespace the better choice?

Squarespace is the better choice when you want one platform to run the whole thing, you are not a designer, and getting live quickly with a clean, reliable result matters more than a distinctive look. Portfolios, small commerce and solo operators are its sweet spot, and it is very good there.

  • It is genuinely all-in-one

Hosting, a domain, an SSL certificate, a store, email campaigns, appointment scheduling and analytics live under one login and one bill.

For someone who does not want to assemble a stack, that is real value, not marketing.

  • The learning curve is low

You can go from nothing to a presentable site in a weekend without touching a design tool or a developer.

That is a legitimate strength, and Framer cannot honestly claim the same for a first-timer.

  • The templates are polished

Squarespace templates look professional out of the box. For a photographer, a small studio or a local business, that is often more than enough.

  • Commerce is built in and reliable

If you sell a modest catalogue, Squarespace commerce (products, checkout, inventory, shipping) works without plugins or third-party glue.

  • It is dependable

Uptime, backups and security are handled. You are not responsible for the plumbing.

If that description fits you, the honest recommendation is to use Squarespace and not overthink it. You do not need Framer, and you do not need us. A Certified Framer studio telling you that should tell you we mean it.

When is Framer the better choice?

Framer is the better choice when your website is a serious sales asset and it needs to look and perform like one. Framer gives a far higher design ceiling, better performance, and native modern interactions, which is what separates a distinctive brand site from a recognizable template. If you are outgrowing Squarespace, or you never wanted a template look in the first place, Framer is the answer.

  • A much higher design ceiling

Squarespace templates are polished but bounded. You are decorating inside a system.

Framer gives a designer near-total control over layout, spacing, typography and motion, so the site expresses your brand rather than a theme everyone recognizes. This is the single biggest reason people move from Squarespace to Framer.

  • Better performance

Framer's rendering is modern, and a well-built Framer site loads quickly, which helps Core Web Vitals.

Speed is not vanity, it affects conversion and search ranking. A heavier all-in-one platform carries overhead that a focused website platform does not.

  • Native interactions without plugins

Scroll effects, hover states, component-level animation and page transitions are built in and granular.

On Squarespace, richer motion usually means fighting the template or bolting on code. In Framer it is native.

  • Differentiation beyond a template

A recognizable Squarespace template signals "small and templated" to some buyers, fairly or not.

For a brand competing on credibility, a site that clearly is not a stock theme does real work. Framer makes fully custom the default, not a fight.

  • Still editable after launch

Framer stays editable by non-developers, so choosing the higher ceiling does not trap you in a developer dependency for every text change.

Who it fits

For the brands we build for, real estate and built environment, education, and creative brands who treat their website as a primary channel, this is usually the deciding column. The website is not a formality, it is where the pitch happens, and the ceiling matters.

Does the platform matter more than who builds it?

No. The platform sets the ceiling, but the team decides how much of that ceiling you actually reach. A great studio on Squarespace beats a weak build on Framer, and a poorly executed Framer site wastes everything Framer makes possible. Choose the tool, then choose the team that can use it well.

Framer's higher ceiling only matters if someone knows how to reach it. That is the part a comparison table cannot show you. At Urest, design, development and growth run as one senior team with no handoffs, so the design that gets approved is the design that ships, built to perform rather than just to look finished. We are a Certified Framer studio, we build most sites in Framer, and we will tell you plainly when Squarespace, Webflow or custom React and Next.js is the better call for your project.

Common questions

Answers, up front.

Is Framer or Squarespace easier to use?

Squarespace is easier for a complete beginner. It is built for non-designers, and you can reach a presentable site quickly without any design-tool experience. Framer has a steeper initial curve because it works more like a design tool, giving you far more control in exchange for a bit more to learn. Once learned, Framer is fast to work in and stays editable by non-developers, but if "easiest possible" is the priority, Squarespace holds that.

Can you move a Squarespace site to Framer?

Yes, but it is a rebuild, not a one-click import. There is no automatic migration that turns a Squarespace site into a Framer site, so the design is recreated in Framer, usually as an opportunity to improve it rather than copy it. Your content, images and copy carry over, and your domain can be pointed to the new Framer site. Transferring a domain away from Squarespace is a standard process, and the site can go live on the same address. If you are considering the move, a discovery call is the fastest way to scope it.

Does Framer do ecommerce like Squarespace?

Not in the same all-in-one way. Squarespace has a full built-in store: products, checkout, inventory, shipping and payments, all native. Framer is website-focused, so commerce is possible but is typically handled through integrations rather than a complete built-in store suite. If selling a catalogue is the core job of your site, Squarespace's native commerce is a genuine advantage. If the store is secondary to a design-led marketing site, Framer plus an integration usually serves better.

Is Squarespace or Framer better for SEO and performance?

Both can load quickly when built well; Framer gives a design-led build fine control over layout and motion without plugins, and speed matters for rankings and conversion either way. Both platforms handle the SEO fundamentals (meta tags, clean markup, sitemaps, custom URLs). The practical difference is less about built-in SEO features and more about how the site is built: a fast, well-structured site outperforms a heavier one on either platform, and Framer makes the fast, well-structured version easier to achieve.
