What is Sanity?

Sanity is a headless content management system. Content is stored as structured JSON documents in Sanity's hosted Content Lake and delivered to any front end through APIs, while editors work in Sanity Studio, an open-source editing app that developers configure in code to match the content model.

How Sanity works

Developers define document types and fields in code, and Studio builds the editing interface from those definitions. Front ends query the content with GROQ, Sanity's query language, or GraphQL. Rich text is stored as Portable Text, a JSON format that any renderer can turn into HTML.

Why teams choose it

Because content is kept apart from presentation, the same documents can feed a website, an app or an email. Real-time collaboration, version history and an editing experience shaped around the team are part of the product.

It pairs well with a framework such as Astro or Next.js, which builds the pages from the content.

What to plan for

Sanity plans limit how many distinct field paths, called attributes, a dataset can hold. A content model that reuses field names across document types scales further than one with many one-off fields.
