A school website grows enrolment when it is built around one decision, a parent choosing where to send their child, and keeps that path clear of everything else. Most school sites do the opposite. They are organised by department, with fees, curriculum and how to visit buried three clicks deep, while the homepage serves people who already enrolled. The fix is less about a prettier design and more about structure. Here is what actually helps.
Serve the deciding parent first
A prospective family is comparing a few schools on a Sunday evening. The things that decide it, fees, curriculum, outcomes, entry requirements, term dates and how to book a visit, should be near the surface, not split across PDFs and login walls. If a parent who has never heard of your school cannot get from the homepage to booking a visit without guessing, the structure is working against you.
Keep the operational content out of the way
Term calendars, newsletters and lunch menus get real traffic and they matter, but they are a different job from winning a new family. Serve both, and keep them apart. When operational content crowds the front of the site, it pushes the enrolment path down the page.
Let the tone do some of the work
Parents paying tuition read tone as evidence. A site that looks generic reads as a school that is generic, which is unfair but real. For independent and private schools especially, the quality of the site is part of how families judge the quality of the school.
Be findable, including by AI
Families search on a small set of high-intent local and category terms, and increasingly they ask an AI assistant to shortlist schools for them. Clear structure, direct answers to the questions parents actually ask, and proper schema make you easier to find in both places.
This is how we approach school sites. Book a discovery call and we will look at where families drop off and what would move enrolment.
