GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of making your content likely to be retrieved, used and cited by generative systems such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot. Classic SEO optimizes for a position in a ranked list. GEO optimizes for being included in a synthesized answer that may never show a list at all. The techniques overlap far more than most vendors admit, but the target is genuinely different, and so is the way you measure it.
The actual difference
In classic search, ten results compete and the user picks. In a generative engine, a model retrieves a set of sources, reads them, and writes a single answer with a handful of links attached. Two consequences follow. First, you are competing for inclusion in a passage, not for a rank. Second, the retrieval step often is not your keyword: Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as using a "query fan-out" technique that issues multiple related searches behind one question. Your page can be pulled in for a sub-question you never targeted, and it can be skipped for a query you rank first for.
What the research actually says
The term comes from a 2024 paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan and Deshpande), presented at KDD 2024. The authors built GEO-bench, a benchmark of user queries across domains, and tested nine content modifications to see which increased a source's visibility in generated answers.
The useful findings, stated carefully because these are benchmark results and not guarantees about any specific engine today:
Adding relevant quotations, statistics and citations to credible sources produced the largest visibility gains, with the paper reporting up to roughly 40% improvement on its visibility metrics.
Gains varied by domain. Statistics helped most in law and government style queries, quotations in people and society topics.
Keyword stuffing performed worse than the unmodified baseline. The tactic that once moved rankings actively reduced visibility in generated answers.
Citation-style improvements helped lower-ranked sites the most, which is the interesting part: generative retrieval is not purely a function of your existing rank.
Treat this as directional evidence about how retrieval and synthesis behave, not as a checklist that guarantees citations.
What Google says, in its own words
This part deserves quoting because so much GEO marketing contradicts it. Google's documentation on AI features states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special optimizations necessary, and adds that you do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files or markup, and that there is no special schema.org structured data required.
So: no magic file, no GEO schema, no secret tag. Eligibility is the ordinary stuff. Your page has to be indexed and able to appear with a snippet. If you use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex, you are also restricting how your content can appear in AI features. Anyone selling you a proprietary AI markup standard is selling you something Google explicitly says you do not need.
Control who can read you
Access is the one genuinely new technical lever, and it is separate from ranking. Google's crawler documentation explains that Google-Extended controls whether your content is used for training Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini apps and Vertex AI, and states plainly that blocking it does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal. OpenAI's crawler documentation separates OAI-SearchBot (which powers ChatGPT's search results, and sites opted out will not appear there) from GPTBot (which collects content for model training). The practical implication: check your robots.txt before you start a GEO programme, because plenty of sites have quietly blocked the search crawlers while trying to block the training ones.
What actually helps
Nothing here is exotic. It is classic quality work aimed at a machine reader instead of a scanner.
Answer the question in the first paragraph. Generative systems lift passages. A page that buries its answer under 400 words of preamble gives them nothing clean to quote.
Be specific and attributable. Concrete figures, named sources and direct quotes are exactly what the GEO research found gets picked up. Vague marketing language is unquotable.
Structure for extraction. Honest headings that match real questions, short self-contained sections, lists where a list is genuinely the answer.
Be the primary source where you can. Original data, first-hand process detail and named expertise cannot be paraphrased from a competitor.
Keep the technical basics clean. Indexable, fast, crawlable, sensible internal linking. Retrieval starts from an index.
Get mentioned elsewhere. Generative answers pull from across the web, so being described accurately on third-party sites you do not control still matters.
How to measure it (honestly)
Measurement is currently the weakest part of GEO, and you should be sceptical of anyone claiming otherwise. Google reports AI feature traffic inside Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type, with no separate breakout, so you cannot cleanly isolate AI Overviews performance there. What you can do: watch referral traffic from AI assistant domains in your analytics, track branded search volume, and run a fixed set of your important questions through the major assistants on a schedule and record whether you are cited. It is manual and imperfect, but it is real, which is more than can be said for most GEO dashboards.
Where this leaves you
GEO is not a replacement for SEO and it is not a new discipline with its own secret rules. It is a shift in what you are optimizing toward: being the clearest, most quotable, most verifiable source on a specific question, and making sure the systems that read the web are allowed to read you. The sites that were already publishing genuinely useful, specific content are winning this quietly.
