What is Cloudflare?
Cloudflare is a company that runs a global network for delivering and protecting websites. Its services include a content delivery network, DNS, DDoS protection and a web application firewall, plus Cloudflare Pages and Workers for hosting static sites and running code at the edge of the network, close to visitors.
What Cloudflare does
Traffic to a site on Cloudflare passes through its network first. Cached files are served from the data centre closest to the visitor, which is the job of a CDN, and harmful requests can be filtered out before they reach the origin server.
Hosting on Cloudflare
Cloudflare Pages deploys sites built with a static site generator such as Astro straight from a Git repository. Workers and Pages Functions run small pieces of server code, for example form handling, close to the visitor.
Redirects and rules
Redirect rules, and a _redirects file on Pages, can return 301 redirects. That is useful when a site moves platform and old URLs need to point to new ones.
