What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results. Built with Gemini models, they answer the query in a few paragraphs and link to the web pages they draw on. Google rolled them out widely in 2024 after testing them as the Search Generative Experience.
How pages get included
Google says there are no extra requirements beyond normal SEO: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in search. Pages that answer the question directly and clearly tend to be the ones linked as sources.
What they change for traffic
When an overview answers the question, fewer people may click through, while those who do click often arrive better informed. Being one of the cited sources keeps a brand visible either way.
How to prepare
Answer common questions in the first lines of the relevant page, structure content with clear headings, keep facts current and use schema markup where it describes the page accurately. The same work supports AEO more widely.
